Pronounced wrinkles may be injected with suitable substances in order to raise their level, this is so-called padding.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural component in connective tissue that binds water in the tissue. The concentration of hyaluronic acid in the tissues decreases with increasing age and thus the skin loses its capacity to store water. Wrinkles thus appear when elasticity and volume disappears.
Injected hyaluronic acid is tolerated very well and excreted fairly rapidly.

Areas of application
Hyaluronic acid preparations used in injections are all associated to varying degrees. Various degrees of cross-linking may be used according to the depth and indications of the wrinkles.
The following regions are particularly suitable for treatment with hyaluronic acid:
Nasolabial folds, lips, wrinkles around the mouth, sunken scars such as acne scars, cheeks, congenital defects or dimples, deep facial lines, where treatment with botulinum toxin would be inadequate since the skin is already broken.
Smaller wrinkles may also be successfully treated with hyaluronic acid.

Procedure
Subsequent to prior discussion, explanation and identification of regions, the various preparations may be injected into different layers of the skin.
This is done done according to the type of wrinkle, be it either column of fan shaped. Filling of the lips occurs in accordance the lip contour.

Side-affects
Initially, the skin swells slights and is a little ruddy in appearance, though this may be mitigated with the use of make-up.
Hyaluronic acid is generally tolerated well.
On rare occasions, undesired reactions such as skin rash, allergic reactions, and infections at the site of injection may be experienced temporarily.
Granuloma formations may occur on rare occasions but these may be broken down with an enzyme.
